I think you will find that some years you get more than others: if it is a good year, there will be enough for your family and for the squirrels. :-)

I have never stored them long in the shell but if you are not going to freeze them, they will definitely keep longerthat way. In a cool dry place, left in the shell, they should overwinter for you (I would think).

Since we have ours cracked commercially (we still have to shell them by hand), I always shell all of mine at once and store them in airtight bags in the freezer. I try to use up one year's crop before the next, but since they are periodic (they don't make a large crop every year), I will proably try to see if this year's crop will stretch out to two years!.

You can eat them straight from the shell and store them that way too. No need to do anything to them first. :-)

Have a wonderful day, and thanks so much for stopping by.

TinaTinahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06049681622118832305noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4164113496966664037.post-41396098317486926732009-10-19T17:52:42.701-07:002009-10-19T17:52:42.701-07:00We have a pecan tree, and for the 1st time in 3 y...We have a pecan tree, and for the 1st time in 3 years we got some! Quite a few actually. The squirrels had taken them all before. So whats the best way to store them? In the shell or shell them? If you shell them, do I need to do anything to them?Wendy @ Ramblings from the Sunshine Statehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11971002056217466891noreply@blogger.com
